On October 1, Prof. Ali Sunyaev took up his post as the new Vice President of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) for the Heilbronn campus. He succeeds Prof. Helmut Krcmar, who has been instrumental in developing the campus since 2018. Sunyaev, 43, is an information business scientist who studied and completed his doctorate at TUM. He was previously a professor of computer science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). At TUM, he will also take on the professorship of Information Infrastructures in the School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT).

President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann is optimistic about the campus' future under Sunyaev's leadership: “Prof. Ali Sunyaev is exceptionally well qualified for the position of Vice President for Heilbronn. He can draw on international experience in science, strategic capability, and excellent communication and management skills to further expand the success story of our TUM Campus in Baden-Württemberg.” At the same time, Hofmann paid tribute to the outstanding commitment of Prof. Helmut Krcmar, who, as founding dean, has contributed significantly to the development of the campus: “Without Helmut Krcmar, this campus would not exist in its present form. Thanks to his extraordinary commitment and the generous support of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, TUM was able to get off to such a successful start in Heilbronn.”

Sunyaev himself emphasized that he sees himself as a “bridge between the disciplines” and that his main task is to “further strengthen research and teaching as well as cooperation with regional industry.” His goal is to make the Heilbronn campus more visible internationally: “With the support of our partners, I would like to put Heilbronn on the international academic and economic map even more firmly. The opportunities are unique.”

The TUM Campus Heilbronn focuses on the digital age and interdisciplinary topics such as corporate governance, digital technologies and data science. More than 1,000 young people are currently studying in Heilbronn at the TUM School of Management (MGT) and the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT) with 22 professors.
