Funding by the European Research Council for Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer

  • Research News

Excellent news and a great honor for Prof. Dr. Jens Förderer, Professor of Innovation and Digitalization at the Technical University of Munich's Heilbronn Campus: The ambitious professor will be funded by the European Research Council with a total of 1.5 million euros over the next five years.

His research project "Fair Competition in App Markets" was able to convince the ERC (European Research Council) committee. His pioneering research aims to understand how the obligations for Apple and Google laid down in the European Union's Digital Markets Act affect competition and innovation in their app stores.

Congratulations also come from TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann: "The ERC Starting Grants are a highly renowned, international confirmation of the scientific quality achieved by these researchers. TUM is thrilled to have these especially promising and talented individuals in its ranks. And I am very much looking forward to seeing the results of their exciting and leading-edge research projects."

Through this prestigious funding, Prof. Förderer will drive forward his research goals in a targeted and focused manner. He has an explicit vision: "Digital markets play an immensely important role in the global economy, but are controlled by a few platforms. We need to better understand how to ensure competition, innovation and fairness in Digital Markets."

The grant approval is an important milestone on this journey, as research is costly and the funds can be used to establish an academic working group for the award-winning project. In addition, many research projects were competing for the important resources. Jens Förderer is therefore happy and proud of the Research Council's decision: "This funding is an award that only very few researchers receive. I am overjoyed that my research convinced the commission and the reviewers."
